1st anniversary of Ceylon Barista Academy
Every great cup of coffee has a story behind it and behind every great cup is an even better barista. But being a great barista is not just about pulling the perfect shot. It takes knowledge, confidence, teamwork, and a genuine care for the experience of every customer who walks through the door.
This simple idea is what Ceylon Barista Academy was built on. On 23rd August 2025, we opened our doors with one small dream to train baristas who don’t just know coffee but also grow into confident and capable people ready for a career in the coffee world.
Last Monday we celebrated one whole year of that dream coming to life.
Our story began behind the counter, not in a classroom. As franchise partners of Barista, a well-loved coffee brand growing across Sri Lanka, we spent years watching cafes in action every single day.
And we noticed something. Finding a "trained" barista wasn't the hard part. Finding a well-rounded one was. Someone who knew their coffee, yes, but who also knew how to lead, how to care for a customer, and how to grow. That gap is exactly why Ceylon Barista Academy came to be.
We never wanted to teach coffee alone. So our lessons go beyond the machine to include teamwork, leadership, customer service, basic finance, cafe operations, and building a real career.
Our goal has always been simple to help our students become confident, capable baristas, ready not just for their first job, but for a whole career ahead of them.
In just one year, close to 300 students have walked through our doors and out into the coffee industry. Each one came with their own dream. Watching each of them grow more confident, batch after batch, has been the sweetest part of this journey. Many are now working happily in cafes and hotels here at home, and some have carried their skills overseas.
If we're honest, this year wasn't always a smooth pour. Like any good espresso shot, it took a few tries to get it just right. There were quiet days early on, empty seats we hoped would fill, and moments of wondering if this dream would really work.
There were long hours perfecting how to teach, not just what to teach. There were students who needed a little more patience, and lessons we had to relearn ourselves.
But for every slow morning, there was a proud one. The first batch that graduated together, nervous and excited all at once. The first message from a student who landed a job. The first time someone told us they were opening their own little cafe. On the day we opened our second branch, in Kurunegala. Small wins that, cup by cup, added up to something big.
That’s the thing about coffee, and about building something you love. It’s never one smooth pour from start to finish. It's a mix of the bitter and the sweet, the slow brews and the quick wins. And looking back, we wouldn't trade a single part of it.
We now have two branches in Nugegoda and Kurunegala, both proudly TVEC approved. This approval reflects our commitment to providing quality and recognized vocational training for future baristas.
Even as we grow, we continue to keep our batches small, with only 10 students per batch. This allows our lecturers to give each student the attention, guidance, and support they need. For us, it’s not just about training more people. It’s about providing quality, TVEC-approved training and helping every student become a more confident and skilled barista.
One year in, our hearts are full, and this is only the beginning. Ceylon Barista Academy will keep growing the way it started, one small batch and one confident barista at a time.
Happy anniversary to us, and to every student who made this year so special. Here's to building the baristas of tomorrow.
